About our Dairy
We started our dairy in November 2016 with the purchase of one cow - Freya (who’s still the matriarch in our milking herd) and three heifers - Buttercup, Daisy and Ellie. Once the girls arrived we fell utterly in love with them and the idea for our dairy business was born.
Our raw milk sales started in 2017 and we were joined by Gaia and Hera - we quickly realised that we needed to expand the herd and by the end of our first year of having cows, were up to 12 milkers plus their calves.
I decided from the outset that I didn’t want to separate cows from their calves as is done in a conventional “snatch calving” system where calves are taken away mere hours after being born. As a result, our cows and calves stay together for 9-12 months (with the calves suckling from their mothers) as they would if they were running together in a natural/non-farmed environment.
In order to keep our cows in as natural a way as possible we feed them:
- Pasture when they’re out on our farm
- Home and locally grown preserved grass
- Lucerne pellets (a type of pasture plant)
We do not use any of the following on our farm:
- Fungcides
- Herbicies
- Insecticides
- Artificial Fertiliser
- Feed containing soya
- Feed containing GMO
- Feed containing grains (for our ruminants)
We especially do NOT use BOVAER or any other so called “methane reducing” additive. As our cattle (and indeed, all our grazing animals) have a natural diet with a wide variety of plants that contain high levels of tannins, this means that they won’t be producing as much methane as cattle fed grain/soya.
